Fishing at Fort Pickens   |   July 04, 2016

On Friday we took a trip to Fort Pickens to do some fishing, swimming, and exploring. Since I didn’t catch anything on Friday I went back out on Saturday morning to try again. Still I didn’t catch anything but we made some great memories.

First thing upon arrive Friday we had a picnic in the sleeping quarters of an old abandoned gun battery. It was hot and it felt good to get out of the direct sun.

If only these fish were edible. I’m going to have to see why no one eats these guys. These are Ladyfish or Skipjacks as they’re sometimes referred to. I could have made one throw with my cast net and caught so many of these fish I could have filled up my whole trunk. They were everywhere and in such a feeding frenzy they almost forgot they needed to stay in the water. Some of them would jump on the beach and flop back into the water.

Both Friday and Saturday the Gulf of Mexico was unusually calm. Generally the waves will start to crest about 200 feet out and roll in to the sand.
